About CEE Lombok
Established in 2020, CEE Lombok is a 501c3 nonprofit organization working in Lombok, Indonesia. Our goal is to work closely with the local community, government, and fellow nonprofits to foster sustainable change and amplify action-based projects.
We take a human-centered approach and leverage windows of opportunity to positively impact the community, economy and environment in Lombok, Indonesia - hence our name, CEE!
Our Roots
In 2018, Lombok experienced a 6.9 magnitude earthquake which devastated much of the island. In response to the quake, CEE Lombok's founders (then Arizona State University students) found themselves working on a variety of development projects within this region. Paige first visited the island in 2019, followed by Jenn later in the year. Each felt instantly connected to the community. They found the people of Lombok to be extremely passionate and humbly patriotic - eagerly sharing the beautiful place they call home with the three newcomers. As their connection with the people and the island deepened, the co-founders knew they wanted to extend the collaboration far past a series of school projects. They launched CEE Lombok, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization to expand their impact and continue working to implement human-centered, environmentally-conscious projects in Lombok.
"Our biggest challenge in this new century is to take an idea that seems abstract - sustainable development - and turn it into a reality for all the world's people" - Kofi Annan

Our Work
Building Drying Greenhouses
Current State:
Agriculture accounts for 35% of North Lombok's economy, with a higher percent in rural areas. Some of the most common crops are coffee and cacao.
Traditionally, farmers lay tarps on the ground and allow their beans to sun dry. Unfortunately, this is a very inefficient method of drying. Roughly 20% of the yield is lost to mold, and the quality of the market-ready product is reduced.
Prototype:
In 2019, a group of Arizona State University students connected to CEE Lombok's founders built and delivered a drying greenhouse prototype to a small farming community in North Lombok called Gumantar.
community in North Lombok called Gumantar.
Follow-up assessments of the greenhouse were conducted 6 months and again at 3 years after implementation. By using the greenhouses, farmers were able to increase their profit margins by 60%!
Although the community loves the greenhouse and uses it for an array of purposes, unfortunately, the capacity is not great enough to handle their output. This leaves most of their product being dried using traditional methods.
Solution:
CEE Lombok, in partnership with the community of Gumantar, will be building an industrial-sized drying greenhouse for shared farmer usage.
A plot of land has been set aside for the project, and the final greenhouse is expected to stretch 10 meters by 10 meters with multiple drying shelves.
Project Update:
August 12th, 2024
We are thrilled to update you with more progress photos of our Solar Drying House! Our dedicated team members in Lombok have been diligently constructing the greenhouse frame and attaching the roof panels. As a friendly reminder, the expansion of the Solar Drying House project depends on the support of donors like yourself.
Bringing EcoBlocks to Gili Trawangan
CEE Lombok is working in collaboration with ConPlas, the local government, and the University of Mataram (based in the capital of Lombok) to bring proven and locally-developed EcoBlock technology to the beautiful island of Gili Trawangan.
Gili Trawangan is a tiny island right off the coast of Lombok - and a hot spot for tourism. The island struggles with waste management, and in particular - plastic waste. CEE Lombok is working to intercept and redirect the current waste stream, helping to capture low-value plastics, mostly LDPE, bound for the island landfill and the ocean and redirecting them to give them a second life as EcoBlocks.
These EcoBlocks will then be used to improve the islands roads, brick fencing walls, and other infrastructure.
This video shows the CEE Lombok and ConPlas teams surveying the plastic waste problem on Gili Trawangan. You can see the massive amounts of unutilized waste generated by locals and tourists.
